There is no doubt that Toyota is developing a new sports car with BMW . Where there is some uncertainty in his name. Many would love to see the return of the Toyota Supra, including own Toyota chief engineer, Tetsuya Tada.
In an interview with CarAdvice, Tada said “I love the Supra and Supra I love the name.”
The global head engineer and father of the Toyota 86 continued: “It is historically important for Toyota. We are pushing for the name for the new car Supra we are developing with BMW. ”
We know that Toyota wants to reserve at least the name Supra as a possibility, as the company recently submitted an application to register the name in Europe. It is believed that the Toyota FT-1 concept 2014 gives us a look at the next generation Supra, although so far not named as such.
As we have reported here, the collaboration between BMW and Toyota will produce a successor to the BMW Z4 (which we will call Z5) and a new sports car for Toyota. The vehicles share the same platform but will only thrusters. According Tada, the joint development goes well.
“I would say the association goes well, smoothly,” Tada said. “We are testing worldwide, not just in Fuji or Nurburgring, but throughout the world.”
So far we have not captured footage of a prototype Supra, but we have seen the version of BMW. The Z5 will leave behind its retractable hardtop for a canvas roof. Not yet powertrain options known, but we expect a turbocharged version of four and six cylinder. When the FT-1 concept debuted two years ago no details on its engine they were given, but it was rumored a hybrid version.
